The 2023 Emmy Awards might take place in… 2024!?

The 75th Primetime Emmys had originally been scheduled to take place on September 18. However, with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) going on strike – which was followed by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) joining them – it became somewhat clear that the Emmys couldn’t air on that original date.

New updates from the WGA and SAG strike suggest that this will take place for months to come. As a result, the 2023 Emmys are being officially postponed, but an official new date has yet to be set.

In fact, according to Variety, it’s entirely possible for the 2023 Emmys to take place in January 2024 if the WGA and SAG strike lasts until the end of this year.

This is pretty bad news for 2023 Emmy nominees who were excited about having their work recognized at the awards ceremony, and who will now have to wait even longer to find out if they won. With that said, considering that most Emmy nominees are a part of the WGA or SAG, this is another way for Hollywood creatives to stand their ground as they pursue better pay and fairer treatment.

Another way to contextualize this potential move to January 2024 is that the Emmys would now be a part of the official awards season that takes place between January and March of every year. These are the months when the Grammys, the Golden Globes, and the Oscars all take place, and it would be interesting to see the Emmys being held so close together to those other ceremonies.

While this might be upsetting news to fans of the LGBTQ+ projects and individuals nominated for Emmys in 2023, it’s important to stand strong with the WGA and SAG strike in order for those queer writers and actors to continue working under proper conditions and receive fair compensation.
