Outside Lands truly has it all!
It likely doesn't come as a surprise that a major music festival in San Francisco would be extremely inclusive and welcoming to all walks of life, but this iconic California event really takes things to another level.
As political discourse against gay people continues to gain momentum around the world, it is crucial that more spaces embrace everything the queer community represents. Thankfully, music festivals such as Outside Lands are at the forefront of LGBTQ+ representation.
There are so many options when it comes to amazing music festivals in the United States, but Outside Lands is one of the only major festivals that features a dedicated, open-air stage specifically curated to celebrate queer nightlife history.
Throughout the weekend, the Dolores' stage includes go-go dancers, drag queens, queer DJs, and immersive experiences that celebrate the vibrancy of the LGBTQ+ community. The designated area lives in the heart of the festival, right next to the biggest stage on the grounds: Polo Field. I've personally never seen a festival dedicate such a prime, highly visible space to proudly showcasing LGBTQ+ culture.
The lineup of major queer headliners and allies performing at the Polo Field this year featured Charli xcx, JADE, Empire of the Sun, RÜFÜS DU SOL, and many more. With the Dolores' stage located right at the edge of the Polo Field, it was impossible to miss out on all of the queer joy happening in the center of the festival grounds.
If you attend other top-tier mainstream festivals such as Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Electric Forest, you'll typically find Pride parties or fun takeovers at some of their smaller stages. It was a true breath of fresh air to see Outside Lands majorly embrace all aspects of queer culture from drag excellence to kink performances. That's simply the magic of San Francisco.
What makes the Dolores' stage so welcoming? Besides proud queer programming all weekend, one of San Francisco's top queer bars takes over on Saturday! The iconic LGBTQ+ drag club OASIS brought a slew of special performances to the festival's Dolores' stage. The lineup even included RuPaul's Drag Race fan-favorite queens Kori King and Lydia B. Kollins. OASIS' legendary owner D'Arcy Drollinger recruited the top queer talent to give festivalgoers an experience they won't forget.
"It's so important for people to see themselves represented on stage. It blow people's minds! Kids who have never seen a drag show can actually be a part of it. It inspires them. It is really important for us as drag performers and trans performers to be able to have these spaces to be seen," Drollinger tells Out.
Beyond the immaculate LGBTQ+ representation at Outside Lands, the party doesn't stop once the final act performs each night. Since the inclusive festival takes place in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco serves as the perfect backdrop for gay fans to keep the fun vibes going by visiting a slew of iconic gayborhoods throughout the weekend. With legendary queer bars scattered throughout the city across notable districts such as The Castro, SoMa, Polk Gulch, or The Mission, there's truly something for everyone.
On a personal note, I can confidently say that attending safe spaces such as Outside Lands should be prioritized for all queer people. I've had the pleasure of covering many music festivals over the years, but the community at Outside Lands really made me feel so loved and seen. In fact, I actually matched with a cute boy on Tinder 6 years ago and finally met him in person at Outside Lands. Right away, he introduced me to his fabulous friend group and they helped me have the weekend of a lifetime. In my opinion, that's what makes being a queer person so amazing.
Who would have thought that Outside Lands would help me finally meet a longtime friend and introduce me to all of the queer joy happening throughout San Francisco? Taking the leap as a solo queer travel is something I recommend to everyone. You never know who you'll meet or what you'll experience by simply taking the leap and joining the music festival community.
If you're looking for the ultimate festival to truly experience everything that makes the LGBTQ+ community shine, then go ahead and add Outside Lands to your travel plans for 2027.
