A proposal to rename a street in San Diego after gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk is headed to the full city council.
The San Diego planning commission approved the proposal on Thursday, which would rename Blaine Avenue to Harvey Milk Street. If the proposal goes through San Diego will be the first city with a Harvey Milk Street. Milk, the slain San Francisco Supervisor and LGBT rights pioneer who was the subject of the 2008 Oscar winning film, has a direct connection to San Diego — he was stationed in the city while serving in the U.S. Navy as a diving instructor.
