Mom and former Boy Scout leader of her seven-year-old son’s troop, Jennifer Tyrrell, who was booted by the organization last year for the sole reason that she is a lesbian, was named one of Parenting magazine’s Best Parents of 2012, according to a release from GLAAD.
The Ohio mom, who is raising four sons with her partner Alicia Burns, responded to the BSA’s ousting by launching a Change.Org petition imploring the organization to reverse its discriminatory ban on gay scouts and LGBT leaders. She then hand-delivered the petition, which garnered 300,000-plus signatures, to BSA’s headquarters.
Among the other parents included in Parenting magazine’s Best Of…list are P!nk, Jennifer Livingston (the ABC news anchor who called out a viewer who called her fat) and a dad who competed in a triathlon with his disabled daughter.
While the BSA has blatantly refused to alter its hateful policy, Tyrrell has vowed to continue to working toward reversing the LGBT ban, according to GLAAD.
