Lesbian Couple First to Marry in Mexican State

A Mexican lesbian couple that was denied a marriage license in March was the first same-sex couple to marry in the state of Jalisco.

Zaira de la O and Martha Sandoval sought legal recognition of their relationship through the courts after being denied a marriage license, according to On Top Magazine. Jalisco's government approved civil unions for same-sex couples on October 30, but the couple was granted a civil marriage through a court injunction.

"We are happy, relishing the moment we sign, with the same nerves as any couple about to marry for the first time," Zaira said to CNN.

Two states in Mexico currently allow legal marriage equality to all couples. A handful of other states offer civil marriages.
