Activists protesting the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold
Prop 8 were being arrested in San Francisco on Tuesday for demonstrating in the streets.
San Francisco police arrested about 175 protesters who were part of a group that blocked a major intersection for hours yesterday.
These arrests for engaging in an act of "Civil Disobedience" came after the California Supreme Court knocked down a challenge to the proposition 8 ban on gay marriage.
San Francisco police lined up and surrounded same-sex marriage protesters who blocked U.S. 101 in downtown San Francisco. Sirens wailed as news helicopters circled in the air above City Hall.
Police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said the protesters were arrested for being outside a crosswalk and failing to obey an officer. Tomioka said she was not aware of any injuries related to the protest.
Officers were seen placing plastic handcuffs on protesters and leading them to police vans waiting nearby while with each new arrest, the crowd cheered.
