Five-Star Hotel Drops the Name 'HoMo' Following Backlash

Sorry, no HoMo.

Following controversy, a planned five-star hotel in Australia has decided to drop its orginally-planned name: "HoMo."

The $400 million luxury property planned for the city of Hobart, Tasmania will accompany the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Boasting 176 rooms alongside a 1075-seat theater and a three-story library, the hotel is set to be completed in 2024 at the earliest.

HoMo was a portmanteau of the words "hotel" and "MONA," and while I think it is a genius ploy to attract gay DINKs (double-income no kids), others have found the name offensive.

MONA's founder David Walsh explained why he decided to change the name.

"There was a slight preference for HoMo but the people that didn’t like it really hated it," he told reporters on December 12.

"But it turned out that I didn’t really have the right to call something HoMo when I’m not gay," he continued. "It offended a few people. I guess I was being culturally insensitive."

The hotel has now officially changed its name to "Motown," which is arguably more appropriative of yet another culture...
