A teacher in Florida is under investigation after reading a book about two male bunnies in love to a first grade class.
The Seminole County School District began the investigation after parents complained about the book, A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo, which had not previously been approved by the district.
It’s unclear what exactly the purpose of the investigation is, or what it involves. But parents are upset about gay bunnies, so investigation it is.
“Noah comes home one day and asks us if it’s OK if two male bunnies were to get married,” Kraig Hudson, whose grandson attends Pine Crest Elementary School, said. “And we said, ‘In our beliefs, no, but we do not judge nobody.’”
In the book, which is aimed at young children, the bunny meets another male bunny, falls in love, and is forbidden from marrying him. They get married anyway, and live happily ever after.
The story was written by the staff of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver as a parody of Mike Pence and his wife and daughter’s book about the family bunny reading the Bible and doing things around the White House.
While books featuring casual G-rated heterosexual relationships are very often read to first graders in public schools, and while political-themed books are certainly a standard in public education for older children, apparently a story about a happy bunny who overcomes bigotry to marry the boy he loves is just crossing a line.
“It’s not something that should be in an elementary school,” parent Wendy Curry said. “That’s for me to decide at home, what I want to teach my child and what I feel they are able to handle.” Curry reportedly has a son that is gay.
Despite the ongoing investigation, the teacher who read the for some reason controversial book currently continues to teach at the school.
