Philippines President Claims He Used to Be Gay in Bizarre Speech

But he also claims to have made himself straight again.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte appears to have made a bizarre claim — that he used to be gay but made himself straight.

On Thursday, he gave a speech making fun of his political rival, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, and saying that the way he moves indicate that he’s gay.

“Good thing Trillanes and I are similar,” Duterte said, according to a translation by Rappler. “But I cured myself. When I began a relationship with [my ex-wife], I said, this is it. I became a man again.”

He added: “Duterte is gay. So I am gay, I don’t care if I’m gay or not.”

Duterte has a long and strange history of remarks about the gay community, including previous jokes insinuating that he used to be gay.

As recently as April, he attacked another political rival, Solicitor General Florin Hilbay, by claiming he’s gay.

“He acts like a man and pretends that [an actress] is his girlfriend…You’re gay. Don't hide behind a cover,” he said. “You were made by God. God made a mistake.”

Again, he took the opportunity to reference his own supposed past homosexuality. “To the gays: don’t get angry with me. I was once gay. It’s true.”

And back in January, he went on a tirade saying “bishops are sons of bitches, damn you. It’s true, most of them are gay. They should come out in the open, cancel the celibacy and allow them to have boyfriends.”

His actual stance on gay rights has been equally confusing.

The President campaigned on a platform that included suggesting the Bible should have included gay people. But in 2017, started the year off by saying marriage should only be for heterosexuals, and ended it by saying he thinks the law could be changed to be inclusive of same-sex marriage.
