Gay Son of Straight Pride Organizer Is Fighting to Cancel the Event

Awkward.

The organizers of an upcoming “straight pride” event in Modesto, California have an unlikely foe — the gay son of one of their own.

Modesto’s straight pride is supposed to take place on August 24, but the organizers are still waiting on their permit.

Matthew Mason, estranged adopted son of co-organizer Mylinda Mason, plans to speak with the city council to convince them there’s no place for a straight pride celebration in Modesto.

“This isn’t ‘straight pride.’ This is hate pride,” he told Fox40.

“This is not a positive message and this community is committed to positivity, to love, to inclusion and to diversity. And this message is none of that.”

Mylinda is working with Don Grundmann, a chiropractor with a failed U.S. Senate campaign, as part of the National Straight Pride Coalition.

But “straight pride” in their case may have as much to do with wanting to celebrate whiteness than wanting to celebrate heterosexuality.

“It is, again, white Caucasians who did come to this country to start liberty and gave us the greatest Constitution in the world,” Mylinda said.

Her sentiment echoes a portion of the NSPC’s website, which insists that Caucasians, Christians, and the “God ordained natural nuclear family” are under “coordinated attack.” The website also says that future generations will be “destroyed by the inherent malevolence of the Homosexual Movement.”

Meanwhile, Mylinda insists all are welcome to attend their event, as “the intolerance doesn’t come from our side.”

Matthew, who came out as gay at 19, disagrees: “This is the woman who raised me actively working against my rights as a human being, who I am as a person.”

“Dog whistling to white supremacy, that is immediately inciting violence,” he added. “I am afraid of violence happening. I don’t want anyone in my community to be hurt.”

In an interesting twist, one of the city council members who will hear the debate over whether or not the straight pride people should get their permit is Matthew’s birth mother.
