Lesbian heiress Casey Johnson died of natural causes, the Los Angeles coroner has ruled.
PEOPLE magazine reports that illicit drugs did not lead to Tila Tequila's fiancé's death and that the specific cause of death was "diabetic ketoacidosis," a condition caused by a shortage of insulin and high blood sugar, according to the coroner statement. The Mayo Clinic describes the condition as a serious complication of untreated diabetes.
"She wasn't taking her insulin. She wasn't taking good care of herself," Chief coroner Ed Winter said.
A full autopsy report will be completed in two weeks, Winter said.
The Johnson & Johnson heiress suffered from severe diabetes since childhood. She was found dead in her West Hollywood home on Jan. 4. It was days before anybody noticed she was gone.
Shortly after her death, a law enforcement source said that hypodermic needles were found in the home and they suspected Johnson partied the night before she died and neglected to take her insulin.
The heiress, 30, left behind her adopted daughter, Ava, 3, who will live with Johnson's mother Sale and her husband Ahmad Rashad "for the foreseeable future," a family source told PEOPLE.
