Marriage equality activists in New York were arrested on Friday morning for chaining themselves to the New York Marriage Bureau.
Alan Bounville, Jake Goodman, Justin Elzie, and Gabriel Yuri Bollag had chained themselves to the building following being denied marriage licenses, along with over 20 other same-sex couples from the activist group Queer Rising.
This was also just prior to lesbian activist Kitty Lambert and a gay male stranger re-entered the building and received approval for a marriage license, and are now married.
Queer Rising spokesperson Spring Super says that the group is adamant in building a "grassroots, national movement" as part of the fight for marriage equality, stating, "It's been very oriented around getting that friendly politician in and out of office. That has been a very bankrupt strategy."
Super expressed discontent with the methods previously used in the fight for same-sex marriage and said her group intends to bring different strategies to the fight.
Super added "Today, through our symbolic marriage applications, rally and civil disobedience, that message was quite clear."
