Atlanta-based rapper
Dolla, born Roderick Anthony Burton II, was gunned down outside of Los Angeles' Beverly Center shopping mall just after 3 p.m. PDT on Monday, according to the
LA Times.
He was accompanied by another local rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, and a fellow Jive Recording artist, Scrapp DeLeon.
Though the Los Angeles Police Dept. would not release the identity of the victim, Dolla's publicist Sue Vannasing confirmed to the newspaper that her client had been shot in the head
while waiting in the valet area of the Beverly Center. The shooting reportedly occurred during a group melee, possibly also involving a knife.
No arrests were immediately made, but the
Associated Press reported that the police were questioning a man found hours later with a gun in the ticketing area of the Los Angeles International Airport.
Tmz.com identified the man as Aubery Berry. Berry, 23, was booked into Los Angeles County Jail early Tuesday morning, held on unspecified charges on $1 million bail.
News of the murder spread rapidly on Twitter where, ironically, the rapper had just opened an account earlier in the day.
Dolla is best known for his single "Feelin' Myself," which was featured in the 2006 feature film Step Up. He also collaborated with Akon on his first single "Who The Fuck Is That?" featuring T-Pain.
Burton was born in Chicago in 1988, and moved to Atlanta when he was five after his father shot himself in front of the rapper and his sister.
His mother, Joyce Burton, still resides in Atlanta, where according to Vannasing Dolla's funeral will be held.
