Adopting a pet makes two lives better!

It's been nearly a month since the Electoral College win of Donald Trump, and if you're a marginalized person (who hasn't been brainwashed or corrupted into hating yourself, people who look and live like you, and other oppressed people) you're probably feeling quite traumatized. It may seem dramatic to some to qualify this as a trauma, but that's how it feels for many people whose healthcare and safety in this country are potentially in jeopardy. Self-care is hard to schedule, and sometimes we just don't care enough about ourselves to commit. However, there is one way to help yourself, every single day, in ways that surpass any other self-care practice: adopting a pet.

No exaggeration, animals have been proven to be therapeutic to their companions. They give so much time and love without asking for much aside from food and shelter, with a few, small additional tasks depending on what animal we're talking about. Regardless, in adopting an animal, you can help not only yourself, but also an animal who desperately needs a home—one who might be killed if someone doesn't save them.

It's a win-win for everyone involved. People push off getting pets all the time, but adopting a pet is a rewarding experience that you shouldn't delay, especially given how awful the days have been since the election (and let's be real, they're probably only going to get worse).

A pet can be there for you, and, unlike another person, won't need time or space to process what's going on. They don't ask questions, or debate politics with you, or make you feel bad. They'll be there when you need space to cry. They'll be there, waiting for you excitedly, when you get home after a long day. They'll be a perfect distraction from triggering social media posts and fake news articles. They'll give you real, genuine love when you really need it the most.

So whether you're looking for a loving, faithful companion who will always be there for you...

Or a sassy friend who just gets you...

Someone to take naps with...

A source of comfort when you're struggling...

Or someone to love...

Do yourself a favor and adopt an animal. Animals are always your best bet when it comes to healthy, beneficial relationships with low mental and emotional risk. Adopt a pet today from any of the following sites: Pet Finder, Rescue Me, Petango, and Adopt a Pet. Also, be sure to check out your local shelters, because it's going to be a long couple months to four years (depending on how this Trump thing actually goes down).

And don't forget, #AdoptDontShop.
