Antigay Letter Sent Home with Maryland Students: Parents Outraged

Parents in a Maryland school district are outraged after several students were sent home with an antigay flyer bearing the message that no one is “born gay” and that people can choose their sexual orientation.

Parents in a Maryland school district are outraged after several students were sent home with an antigay flyer bearing the message that no one is “born gay” and that people can choose their sexual orientation.

The flyer reads:

“According to mainstream psychological associations, there are no replicated scientific studies to support that a person can be born “gay.” No “gay gene” or gay center of the brain has been found. No medical test exists to determine if a person is homosexual. Sexual orientation is based on feelings and is a matter of self-affirmation and public declaration.”

My Fox DC reports the letter was sent out by Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX). Peter Sprigg, a board member of the group, asserted that the letter only highlights a need for understanding of a different viewpoint about homosexuality.

“If people were to actually read the content of the flyer that we’re distributing, they will see there is nothing in here that is insulting or even critical of homosexuals,” he said.

Karen Yount-Merrell, a clinical social worker and parent in the district, was angered when her son came home with a copy because the flyer “reiterates a societal view that there’s something ‘wrong’ with you, if you’re not in the norm. If you aren’t heterosexual.”
