Florida Teen Kaitlyn Hunt Loses Plea Deal in Sex Offender Charge - Lands in Jail
Kaitlyn Hunt’s plea deal has been withdrawn and she is back in jail, according to CBS News.
The 19-year-old Floridian, who had been facing felony sex offender charges for having a relationship with a younger girl, has reportedly violated the terms of her pretrial release.
These terms included a prohibition against contacting the younger girl, who was 14 at the time of their relationship. Prosecutors allege that Hunt sent nearly 20,000 messages through text and Facebook, including several nude photographs and an explicit video. The pair also continued to secretly meet, according to the state attorney’s office.
Hunt stayed overnight in the Indian River County Jail on Monday. A judge will determine on Tuesday if she should be returned to the county prison for her actions.
Kaitlyn Hunt was 18 when she began dating a 14-year-old female student and teammate on her varsity basketball team. The younger girl's parents didn't approve of the relationship, and after Hunt ignored their requests to leave their daughter alone, filed felony sex abuse charges. In Florida, the age of consent is 16.
Hunt was arrested in February, and charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12-16 years old, a felony offense. As a result of the charges, she was expelled from her high school and could serve up to 15 years in prison.
Hunt and her family launched a massive social media campaign chanting, "Stop the Hate, Free Kate," and contending Hunt was being unfairly targeted because she was in a same-sex relationship.
