While reflecting on the Transgender Day of Remembrance, Janet Mock wrote, "We need to stop saying, 'She was such a great person' / 'She was such an amazing talent' / 'She was such an impactful leader.' We need to begin saying, 'She is such a great person' / 'She is such an amazing talent' / 'She is such an impactful leader.' We can’t only celebrate trans women of color in memoriam. We must begin uplifting trans women of color, speaking their names and praises, in their lives."
The Trans Life & Liberation Art Series does just that. Since February 2016 a group of trans visual artists has created one collaborative portrait a week honoring other trans artists and organizers. The series centers on trans women and femmes of color, and disabled and incarcerated trans people of color. Subjects have included writer and activist Raquel Willis, multimedia performance maker and cultural producer Kiyan Williams, and founder and director of the Tennessee Transgender Journey Project LaSaia Wade.
Subjects collaborate with visual artists, including Chucha Marquez, Ebin Lee, and Ethan X Parker, to tell trans stories and honor the work of trans artists, organizers, and activists who are part of the trans liberation movement.
The Trans Life & Liberation Art Series also works with social justice organizations including Get Equal and Strong Families and has created art to support Ky Peterson’s release after he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for defending himself against sexual assault, and Christiana Lopez’s release from immigration detention.
Now the series plans to expand. Their Kickstarter campaign lays out their goals for the future: continue paying artists and portrait participants, exhibit the work in Oakland, CA in Winter and Spring of 2017, and publish a coloring book and full-color limited edition art book with all profits redistributed back to participants.
Those who donate to the Kickstarter campaign will be rewarded with uplifting art from the series, from coloring books and postcards to museum quality art prints and original portraits.
You can find previous portraits on the Trans Life & Liberation Art Series Tumblr, or support the project on Kickstarter here.
