5 Fabulous Costume Ideas for Queer Couples

Some costumes may call for a gay touch. while others are inherently queer. Here are five great fictional queer couples that would be a hit at any Halloween party this year!

1. Hedwig and Tommy Gnosis, Hedwig and the Angry Inch

OK, OK, so they’re theoretically broken up and maybe were never out as a couple, and Tommy profited off of  Hedwig’s music. However, there’s a deep love here that can’t be denied. The great thing about this couple is that you can choose to do a down-to-earth costume or an over-the-top one depending on what scene from the show the two of you choose. Regardless of the choice, Tommy and Hedwig make a bold queer symbol and a fun pair to play for an evening.

2. Armand and Albert, The Birdcage

The Birdcage, a film that came out in the mid-1990s (and was a remake of a 1978 French film), portrayed the burden of performing normativity at a time when LGBT folks were still seriously condemned much more then they are today in America. Oddly enough, the 1990s are influencing current fashion, so dressing like Armand and Albert shouldn’t be incredibly challenging.

3. Santana and Brittany, Glee

How do you not love Santana and Brittany? When the girls came to terms with themselves and Santana’s gutsy assertiveness shut down the boys rallying for girl-on-girl objectification, we applauded them on from home! Their relationship showed America that teenagers know who they are and there’s no difference between straight and gay love. If you and your sweetheart can find red-and-black cheerleading suits, you should declare that Halloween is actually Brittana Day.

4. Fergus and Dil, The Crying Game

The Crying Game came on the scene at a time when a film featuring anything outside of white, cis, straight couples was considered fringe art. Not only did the film spotlight an interracial couple in Fergus and Dil, it provided a somewhat sensitive (for its time) portrayal of a trans woman. It crushed assumptions of gender identity and sex. This film was released in 1992, so the thrift shop is a great place to buy outfits that represent both characters.

5. Amanita and Nomi, Sense8

The Netfilix series Sense8 highlights a queer relationship between the San Francisco-based Nomi Marks, a transgender lesbian “hacktivist” and blogger, and Amanita, a radical queer cis woman who works in a bookstore and loves cosplay. The two carry much of the show’s storyline, acting as a beacon of hope through their wit and sweet love. Embodying their style isn’t very hard. They represent current queer fashions really well.
