As wonderful as it is that Doctor Who has finally brought on a woman to play the iconic role of the Doctor, there’s still one glaringly obvious thing missing from the latest iteration of the story: the Doctor’s wife.

Sure, River Song didn’t exist through the majority of the Who-verse, which is to say, the original run, and her story has technically had its beginning and ending, but now the Doctor is a LADY, so the fans deserve at least some moments to see that play out.

And Alex Kingston, who played Song through the years, is still on board for it to happen.

“I love the character, and I think that, my gosh, there are wonderful potential opportunities down the road,” she told RadioTimes recently.

Kingston met Jodie Whittaker, who plays the Thirteenth Doctor, at San Diego Comic Con last summer, and apparently the two discussed the possibility of their characters sharing screen time in the future.

Considering the Doctor is technically always the same person and just takes on different appearances over time, fans have long argued that, while no Doctor’s sexuality has been explicitly labeled, if Eleven married a woman, then Thirteen would still be just as interested in women, and specifically, that woman.

“The fact is, because they’re the same person ultimately, I don’t think [River] would think of her any differently to any of the others in a way,” Kingston said. “Because they’re the same spirit inside. It’s just a different, deep love.”

And of course, it wouldn’t be River Song’s first foray into loving a woman, as Kingston recalls.

“And you know, technically the Doctor is River’s second wife. Cleopatra being the first.”

It’s unclear what direction the BBC would want to take things, as they’ve been hushed on the matter. And there was that one time where the BBC America Twitter briefly tweeted out the photo of Kingston and Whittaker, calling it “The Doctor and her wife” before deleting it and replacing the caption with one a lot more “no homo.”

But we’re still ready for River Song to join back up with the gang, no matter the timey-wimey hoops she has to jump through to get there, and even if it’s just for a moment.

And considering Kingston keeps proving to be a vocal supporter of River’s return to the show, there’s really no excuse for them not to bring her back so she can “take her [wife] in her arms and give her a big kiss,” as Kingston suggested previously.
