Pray Away centers on the heartbreaking truth behind the origin of “Exodus International” as told by those who lived it.

The trailer for the upcoming documentaryPray Away has arrived and it looks to be heartbreaking, infuriating, and essential viewing.

Directed by Kristine Stolakis, the film centers on the story of how five gay men struggling with their sexuality started a bible study group to help them leave the “homosexual lifestyle.” This turned into Exodus International, “the largest and most controversial conversion therapy organization in the world.”

The leaders of Exodus International quickly became superstars of the religious right, confidently declaring that the program was a success. However, behind the scenes, they privately continued to struggle with their secret same-sex attractions — which, spoiler alert, can’t be prayed away.

The film focuses on the “dramatic journeys of former conversion therapy leaders, current members, and a survivor, [and] chronicles the “ex gay” movement’s rise to power, persistent influence, and the profound harm it causes,” said Netflix.

Pray Away premieres on Netflix on August 3. Watch the trailer here:
