Abby Wambach, Sarah Huffman Reported Wed in Hawaii

Soccer stars Abby Wambach and Sarah Huffman had a marriage ceremony over the weekend in Hawaii, TMZ reports.

The website says the women, both members of the U.S. women’s national team, exchanged vows Saturday in a beachfront ceremony at Sunset at the Villas at Po’ipu Kai on Kauai. Hawaii does not offer legal same-sex marriages, but it does offer civil unions; there is no word so far on if the pair got a civil union license, or if their wedding was simply symbolic.

Huffman came out quietly this year when she announced she was working with Athlete Ally, an organization that seeks to combat homophobia in sports. “I am excited to be an ally and stand up for people like me in the LGBT community,” she said in a post on the Athlete Ally website in July. She and Wambach have been rumored to be dating for some time, but Wambach has never officially come out.

TMZ reports today, however, that “multiple sources confirm” the two were married, with the ceremony attended by family and close friends, including fellow members of the women’s national team, such as Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux.

Wambach and Huffman also both play professionally for the Western New York Flash. Wambach is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and is the world’s second-leading all-time scorer in women’s soccer, behind only Mia Hamm.
