Carol may have been snubbed in the Academy Award best picture and best director categories, but its excellent stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are nominated, and they’re still offering gems about the film in interviews. Cate cuts up a bit in this interview with Variety in which they touch on the universality of the love story and whether or not Carol is a political film.

Cate explains that screenwriter Phyllis Nagy was commissioned to adapt the story 18 years ago, adding, “which is a long time for a lesbian story to sit in the closet.”
