Want to Help End Police Brutality? Donate to These Orgs
Want to help fight racism and police brutality? These orgs need your help!
Over the past weekend, anti-police brutality protests emerged all over the country to raise awareness and seek justice for the unjust deaths of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, and so many other countless Black lives at the hands of racist police. Activists all over the country have been making it clear that Black Lives Matter and that police brutality needs to stop—immediately.
Times may be tough, but if you have the financial means to help out the cause, there are plenty of terrific organizations nationwide that you should consider donating to and that are providing the necessary support and monetary resources protestors need to make their voices heard. Here's some notable ones:
Minnesota Freedom Fund
One of the most visible organizations providing financial relief for protestors in the state of Minnesota who are raising their voices against the murder of George Floyd, MFF's mission is to "pay criminal bail and immigration bond for those who cannot afford to as we seek to end discriminatory, coercive, and oppressive jailing."
The George Floyd Memorial Fund
Set-up by his brother Philonise Floyd, the official George Floyd Memorial Fund is raising money for the Floyd family in the aftermath of his tragic death, "to cover funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist the family in the days to come as we continue to seek justice for George. A portion of these funds will also go to the Estate of George Floyd for the benefit and care of his children and their educational fund."
Reclaim the Block
A Minneapolis-based grassroots org, Reclaim the Block invests "in violence prevention, housing, resources for youth, emergency mental health response teams, and solutions to the opioid crisis—not more police." Their mission is to "make sure that our communities have the resources they need to thrive. Our grassroots group is up against the deep pockets of the Minneapolis police union."
Campaign Zero
The national research organization helps the fight against police brutality by using data to hold police accountable. "Over 1,000 people are killed by police every year in America," their mission statement reads. "We are calling on local, state, and federal lawmakers to take immediate action to adopt data-driven policy solutions to end this violence and hold police accountable."
Brooklyn Community Bail Fund
The New York-based community bail relief fund has been helping provide bail for those who are protesting police brutality and George Floyd's unjust killing. "We're honored by the recent outpouring of donations from individuals around the world and their commitment to pay bail for demonstrators demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and all victims of our violent and racist police state," the said in a statement. "We're committed to liberating those arrested in current demonstrations against police violence and are working to coordinate our intervention with community members, grassroots organizations, other bail funds, and public defenders."
LGBTQ Freedom Fund
The LGBTQ Freedom Fund helps posts bail for the "tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ people are held in jail or immigration detention because they cannot afford bail—for immigration status or charges like sleeping in public."
"In tandem, we raise awareness of the epidemic of LGBTQ overincarceration," their mission statement says. "We strive towards a critical mass against mass detention."
