Black Drag Race Legends Team Up & Spread Love in New PSA
Everybody say love!
RuPaul's Drag Racestars Heidi N Closet, Latrice Royale, Mayhem Miller, Widow Von Du, Mariah Paris Balenciaga, and The Vixen have released a new pubic service announcement for racist fans.
The iconic queens talk about who they are outside of drag and ask the fandom to "pledge to spread joy and kindness to all of us."
"Underneath the eleganza is a human being just like you. We need to collectively stop the threats, stop the racism that's affecting this community."
Unfortunately, Black queens who appear on the reality series are disproportionally harassed by the Drag Race fandom and have repeatedly spoken out about the abuse they've received over the years. Season 12 winner Jaida Essence Hall is the latest to share her experience through a series of tweets.
“Just a random thought... during season 12 I was lucky enough to not receive too much hate, but I did notice that the moments I recieved a TON were when introduced myself as “the Essence of beauty” in my meet the queens and jokingly declared myself trade of the season.... “(3/3) that we aren’t beautiful as we are and we believe it. But that’s a lie. And I dont care who tells you that you arent believe me, you are. More than you know. I’m proud to be finally learning to love me and I dont care who is threatened by it. Y’all should be too ❤️”— Jaida Mess-ence Hall (@Jaida Mess-ence Hall) 1600791416
"Growing up so much imagery tells people like me that we aren’t beautiful as we are and we believe it," she wrote. "But that’s a lie. And I dont care who tells you that you arent believe me, you are. More than you know. I’m proud to be finally learning to love me and I dont care who is threatened by it. Y’all should be too."
For this PSA, VH1 collaborated with The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis prevention organization for LGBTQ+ young people, "to provide viewers with a way to take action to end bullying and guide discussions around the intersections of race and LGBTQ identities," the press release reads. "The pledge is part of the show’s continued commitment to use social platforms to speak out against the racist comments that exist on social media directed at our Black Queens. To speak out and condemn racism in all forms."
