Amber Heard Discusses Bisexual Identity and Prejudice
Amber Heard, who you may know from Magic Mike XXL or The Danish Girl, is opening up about her views on bisexual identity and the challenges that come with it.
Heard came out as bisexual back in 2010 with the announcement that she was dating artist Tasya van Ree. Then, in 2012, Heard married Johnny Depp, an action that predictably, (and sadly) brought with it incorrect declarations of Heard's identity. She quickly became very straight-washed, surrounded by all-too familiar comments such as "She can't be— she's with Johnny Depp!" and "No, she's not. She married a dude!"
In a recent interview for The Independent, Heard discussed trans rights, sexism in Hollywood, and, of course, her bisexuality and the accompanying prejudices.
"The one way we will achieve change in a positive direction towards accepting people for who they are and looking beyond superficial means to judge people instead of falling prey to our prejudices and our tribal instincts towards fear... the only way we’re going to get over that is by being familiarised with it, by being exposed to it.”
Heard ended the conversation of this part of her identity by stressing the importance of teaching people who may be unfamiliar with bisexuality or any other identity.
"I’ve said this before, but education is the antidote to prejudice."
