Chely Wright Heads to North Carolina to Battle Proposed Same-Sex Marriage Ban

Country star Chely Wright will travel to North Carolina next week to do battle against proposed legislation that could lead to a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in the Tar Heel State.

Country star Chely Wright will travel to North Carolina next week to do battle against proposed legislation that could lead to a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in the Tar Heel State.

In an effort to halt legislation that could put the issue on the 2012 ballot, Wright will speak to North Carolina politicians Monday. The singer, who married Lauren Blitzer (pictured right) in Connecticut last month, will also be in attendance at a Raleigh rally against the amendment Tuesday, which is timed to the North Carolina legislature's debate on the amendment.

This proposed marriage ban is “not about preserving the sanctity of marriage ... Rather, this measure is about tearing down the sanctity of human dignity. It is that full humanity that God places in the gay and lesbian individual as he does us all. And it is the full humanity that he wants us to recognize and embrace rather [than] reject, condemn and demean,” Wright said, according to LGBT rights group Equality North Carolina.
