Though Callie and Arizona got hitched last season on Grey's Anatomy, actress Jessica Capshaw says she's not sure if the couple ever signed those legally binding domestic partnership papers.
Capshaw toldTV Linethat the while her character Arizona Robbins' marriage to Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) was spiritually binding, she doesn't think they signed anything to make it official in the eyes of Washington state, where domestic partnerships are recognized.
Capshaw also talked about the weight of playing such an engaging, complex lesbian character on network television.
"It feels very profound. It’s not lost on me at all, that I am lucky enough to play a character, and the writers are smart enough and in-tune enough to write a character that helps people," Capshaw said. "We are, at the end of the day, making a television show, and it's entertainment. It's meant to be fun, and it's not real, but when there's a character that people can invest in as though it were life, and let it really be a mirror that's held up to life, and they can glean an understanding of themselves, and the world, or community, then that's beautiful. It's as good as it gets."
