Ellen DeGeneres got back to taping her show for the first time since the horrific events that unfolded in Newtown, Conn. on Friday when a gunman opened fire at an elementary school killing 20 children and six adults. Ellen took a moment before moving on to the usual business of the day, like giving away holiday gifts and interviewing celebrities, to dedicate her show to the people of Newtown.

“Today we’re taping our first show since the events that took place in Connecticut. My goal for this show everyday is to make you happy, to make you feel good for an hour,” Ellen said. “I want it to be a safe zone. I want it to be light and filled with joy. I want you to know that you can watch with your family and it won’t be mean or sad.”

Ellen began to get choked up when she added, “We’re going to do the show today but it’s going to be a struggle, because my heart is broken for those families, and for all the people in Newtown.”
