While other members of her family rally against marriage equality, Marie Osmond has endorsed it as a civil right.
Osmond took her stand when she was interviewed by Diane Sawyer as Person of the Week on ABC’s World News Friday night. The entertainer, who has a new memoir out, The Key Is Love, discussed her daughter Jessica Blosil, who came out as lesbian at age 17.
“I believe in her civil rights, as a mother,” Osmond said. “I think my daughter deserves everything she desires in life.”
Her stance is in contrast with that of some other members of the Osmond clan. Marie’s oldest brother, Alan Osmond, hosted an anti–marriage equality rally Tuesday at the Utah state capitol with his wife, Suzanne, with performances by their son Nathan, a popular country singer, and other members of the Mormon family — but not Marie.
In her interview with Sawyer, Marie Osmond also discussed the suicide of her son Michael Blosil and the attitude she takes with her children. “I don’t tell my children if you’re not good, you’re going to hell,” she said. “I tell my children that God will be there for them when they struggle. That’s the God I believe in.”
