Comedy nerds rejoice: Whoopi Goldberg's latest project, a documentary that will air on HBO, chronicles the audacious career of black lesbian comic Moms Mabley.
Moms Mabley: I Got Somethin’ to Tell You, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this week. Mabley's racy act gained notoriety in Harlem's iconic Apollo Theater before she launched into national fame on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. All the while, Moms was fairly candid about being out.
"She was a great comic and being gay had nothing to do with it," Goldberg said at the screening of the documentary, according to AfterEllen. "I was like 'What the! How come nobody talked about this' They didn’t talk about it because it didn’t matter, it had nothing to do with her comedy and no one was interested in her personal life. They were talking about how funny she was, always. I kind of like that, that people got to have their life."
The documentary includes commentary from Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, Joan Rivers, Jerry Stiller, and Kathy Griffin.
The doc will head to HBO, but just in case you need a little more Moms, here's a few clips that will certainly make you giggle at your desk.
