Shonda Rhimes Gives 'Grey's' Calzona Fans Reason to Worry About Infidelity

Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) have established themselves as the go-to couple at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital (formerly Seattle Grace), which is impressive because they have gone through their share of challenges throughout their relationship. You know, in the usual car wreck, plane crash kind of way. But now, as the 9th season is wrapping, the challenge ahead is one that most couples have to deal with, cheating and/or the threat of infidelity.

Grey’s Anatomy's showrunner Shonda Rhimes confirmed to TVline.com that our favorite primetime lesbian couple could be in for some rough waters.  "Straight people have their cheating moments all of the time. We’ve created this relationship that’s very interesting and complex, and I feel like we’re at a moment where this [temptation] feels earned. We’re doing something that feels very in keeping with what’s right for these characters," Rhimes said.

To bring you up to speed, Callie and Arizona have had a hard time connecting since Arizona lost her leg in the season 8 finale last year.  Arizona was a passenger in the plane crash that took the lives of Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Mark (Eric Dane).

Early on, Arizona blamed Callie for not doing more to save her leg.  But lately the pair were getting closer….until the last episode, when viewers were introduced to a new craniofacial specialist named Lauren Boswell (Hilarie Burton from One Tree Hill/White Collar).  Arizona and Lauren immediately had a flirtation, one that was a little threatening to Callie.

So, just how far will things go?  According to the Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Rhimes is taking their flirtation “very, very far,” but who knows if Arizona and Lauren will ever seal the deal.

What we do know is that the cast was left speechless after their table read for the finale.  "The goal of the [Calzona] story becomes really clear in the last moments of the finale: you really begin to understand in their last scene," Rhimes said. “That was the most stunning moment of the table read -- the entire cast gasped and fell silent."

Burton was also interviewed by the Hollywood Reporter and she said “it's just a truth that there are always threats out there to families and those threats can be really kind people, really good-looking people, really fun people who you get along with really well. Threats exist everywhere and Arizona has some big choices to make and my goal going in is to facilitate her character's choices.”

When asked what it’s like to be the lady who comes between such an important couple to the LGBT community, Burton said, “It's really important to have positive relationships portrayed for every lifestyle to look to and say, "That's me." It would do a disservice to any community to present everything as all rainbows and sunshine. There's always threats to family and you have to fight for what's yours.”

Sounds like a season 9 cliffhanger to me.

The last two episodes of Grey’s will air beginning Thursday night at 9pm on ABC.
