Masters of Sex already looked like a promising new series for our DVRs, but the Showtime drama seems even more interesting with theater star Annaleigh Ashford (Kinky Boots) playing a lesbian prostitute.

Premiering in September, the show stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan — yeah, Janis from Mean Girls — as real life sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson. The pair teamed up for decades to research how both gay and straight people experience (or, as the trailer shows, don’t experience) pleasure with each other.

Meanwhile, Ashford plays Betty DeMilo, a lesbian who sleeps with men for money. “She’s a gay woman who is also a prostitute and she faces a very difficult dilemma and it does have to do with what the options were for someone in 1956 and 1957 if you were a gay single woman,” creator and executive producer Michelle Ashford told After Ellen.
