Amy Poehler Fights for Gay Rights, Sort Of, On 'Parks and Recreation'

What's better than Amy Poehler opening up the second season of Parks and Recreation rapping to Will Smith’s classic “Parents Just Don’t Understand?” Amy Poehler becoming a gay activist of course! Trying to spruce up activities at the zoo, Leslie (Poehler), throws a birthday party for a parrot, graduates a chimpanzee, and unknowingly marries gay penguins.

So what could be better than Amy Poehler opening up the second season of Parks and Recreation rapping to Will Smith’s classic “Parents Just Don’t Understand?” Amy Poehler becoming a gay activist of course! Well, sort of. In an effort to make spruce up activities at the zoo, Leslie (played by Poehler), decides to throw a birthday party for a parrot, graduate a chimpanzee, and unknowingly marry a pair of gay penguins.

When word of the gay nuptials break out, Leslie becomes the next target of the Society for Family Stability Foundation, who demand her resignation, proclaiming that, “when gays marry, it ruins marriage for the rest of us,” but also becomes the next gay rights poster child, literally earning herself an Obama-style iconic poster, and an invite to play guest of honor at Bulge, the local gay bar.

Since she can’t say no to a free drink, Leslie accepts the invitation but intends to set the record straight that she has no stance on the issue, but when she’s given rounds of applause (and a couple shots) for being such a crusader for the cause, she can’t help but join in. “You know why tonight’s so fun? Cause everyone’s so gay… and the dancing!”

When she proclaims herself queen of the gays, (snatching the title up from Lady Gaga perhaps), she’s again under fire with SFSF who demand her resignation if she doesn’t annul the marriage on Pawnee Today, Leslie’s forced to take stance on her actions, defending that, “last time I checked, I don’t think I murdered anyone, or had an affair, or did drugs!”

So what’s to do when the gay penguins you marry are under fire? Take them to Iowa of course, where they can be married gays in peace.
