Lauper was in Japan touring for her Grammy-nominated album Memphis Blues when the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami happened on March 11, followed by a threat of nuclear crisis. Despite being told to leave, Lauper and her band opted to stay and offer support "through the healing power of their music," according to a press release.

Lauper wanted to personally offer fans some distraction, and "a chance to unite and transcend the national tragedy through music." In addition to her concerts, she is collecting cash and doing TV and radio charity events at each show, and donating all her royalties from Memphis Blues earned in Japan to the Japanese Red Cross. She also recorded a ringtone to sell through Kyodo in Japan, with all of the proceeds going to help victims of the disaster.

The music superstar has plenty of experience with humanitarian aid. She is a co-founder of the True Colors Fund, along with its related tour, and the "Give A Damn" Campaign to further LGBT equality and end homelessness among LGBT youth. She has also helped raise millions of dollars for people affected by HIV/AIDS as a spokesperson for MAC Viva Glam lipstick and lipglass.

Lauper's Memphis Blues tour will continue this summer in Europe.
