As Election Day approaches, Cynthia Nixon reviews the progress of Fight Back New York, the PAC dedicated to defeating New York state senators who voted against the marriage equality bill last year.
Nixon reviews the celebrities who have contributed videos for Fight Back New York in the past year, including Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Rosie Perez, Alec Baldwin, and Whoopi Goldberg. She also reminds viewers of recent successes at the ballot box.
“For the first time ever, elected officials know that there are real consequences to voting against our rights,” she says.
So far this year, Fight Back New York has contributed to the defeat of two Democratic state senators, Hiram Monserrate of Queens and Bill Stachowski of Buffalo, who voted against the marriage equality bill that failed by a 38-24 margin last December. Advocates hope to increase pro-equality votes in the senate, where Democrats are straining to maintain and expand their slim 32-30 lead, before the chamber votes on the bill again.
Tim Kennedy, the pro-marriage equality Democrat who defeated Stachowksi in the primary, holds a six-point lead over his Republican opponent, Jack Quinn, based on the latest Siena poll.
Fight Back New York also is targeting state senator Frank Padavan, a longtime Republican incumbent from Queens, who voted against the marriage equality bill. Padavan holds a 24-point lead over his Democratic challenger, Tony Avella, according to the Siena poll.
