Even though pop sensation Lady Gaga made $200 Million less than Oprah this year, she beat out the competition in other categories. With over 32 Million Facebook friends and more than 10 Thousand Little Monsters following her on Twitter, Lady Gaga’s social media presence has pushed her perfectly shaped bum past Oprah to snag the top spot on Forbes’ list of top 100 Most Powerful Celebrities.
The candidates were ranked on their gross income, television or radio presence, web buzz and social rank. Momma Monster was 8th in income earned, but was in the top three for television/radio and in the press, and ranked #1 in web and social presence. Oprah lead the pack as far as income and television, but didn’t manage to make the top ten in new media coverage.
“She can use Twitter and Facebook to work the ‘little monsters’ into a frenzy that leads to record sales and media attention,” Forbes editor Dorothy Pomerantz told Reuters. “She’s the best example of how celebrities will need to manage their careers in the coming years.”
I guess the, “You get a car! You get a car! You get a car! Everybody gets a car!” tactic didn’t work as well as it would have had the giveaway gone viral.
This is the third time Oprah has had to relinquish her throne in the past 7 years. Don't get too comfortable though, Gaga. Maybe this time next year we'll be seeing J.Biebz move up from his spot at #3 to the tippity top.
