If you’re like the millions of fans who were immediately hooked on Fox’s Glee after its post-American Idol sneak preview in May, then you and your couch were not disappointed when the musical comedy made its long-awaited return to the air Wednesday night.
If the Glee kids’ version of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” didn’t make you tap your foot and sing along at home, then perhaps Jane Lynch’s series of matching track suits and politically incorrect one-liners as “Cheerios” coach Sue Sylvester should have had you setting your DVR to record the series.
Lynch is an absolute riot as the anti-Glee Club cheerleader coach and taps into her inner butch dyke when she played dog trainer extraordinaire Christy Cummings in Christopher Guest’s Best in Show. She pumps iron — OK, they’re 3-pound dumbbells — and downs Iron tablets to help her prevent menstruating, but mostly she’s the thorn in underdog teacher/Glee Club coach Will Schuester’s (Matthew Morrison) side.
The real story with this hourlong show is really the kids — that is, when Lynch isn’t stealing every scene she’s in. Wednesday’s episode delivered again with Glee clubbers Lea Michele (who plays the overconfident star-in-training Rachel) and Cory Monteith (the popular quarterback with a love for Journey) and the rest of the group — including Morrison — belting out Kanye West’s "Gold Digger" and later winning over the pessimistic student body with arendition of Salt ’N’ Pepa’s "Push It."
With tracks performed on the show, created by the openly gay Ryan Murphy (FX’s Nip/Tuck), available immediately for sale on iTunes — "Gold Digger" was available immediately after Glee ended Wednesday night — and a Fox- and MySpace-sponsored karaoke contest offering winning fans who submit videos of their performances, the show already looks to be the hit of the newly launched fall TV season.
