'Project Runway' - One Hot Green Mess

'Project Runway' - One Hot Green Mess

This week on Project Runway, half the contestants failed to impress with their designs, but none more so than normally classy designer Ra'mon. The designers were tasked with a two-part challenge. First, create a movie character of their own imagining based on a classic Hollywood film genre, then create a character of their own imaging to build their outfit around.

This week on Project Runway, half the contestants failed to impress with their designs, but none more so than normally classy designer Ra'mon. Sadly, once again the best design failed to win and the worst designer was given a pass to stay another week.

The Challenge: On this week's episode of Project Runway, the designers were tasked with a two-part challenge. The first part was to create a movie character of their own imagining based on a classic Hollywood film genre. The second part was to create a movie character of their own imagining to build their outfit around.

Action Adventure - Logan / Carol Hannah
Film Noir - Irina, Louise, Althea
Science Fiction - Ra'mon, Nicholas
Period Piece - Gordana, Christopher
Western - Epperson, Shirin

The Sticky Part: The designers were only given one day to complete the challenge. Not all of the designers handle the stress well.

A Little Romance: It's hard not to be amused at the constant lust directed by every female on the show toward cute boy designer Logan. This week, it was co-contestant Carol Hannah gushing - and blushing - about the only straight boy designer this season.

The Drama Quotient: Last in the draw on choosing a movie genre, Epperson is a total freak about having to make a design in a Western theme. He gets so worked up about it, it's almost obvious he'll actually make something fabulous. That's just the way the show editing goes. Christopher bitches about how expensive fabrics are during the shopping trip to Mood - but then, he just likes to bitch. Louise loses her shit a bit over a missing bobbin and Gordana gets cranky over her missing pinking shears. Is there a thief in the sewing room?

But the major drama of the evening was all about Ra'Mon and his insane reptilian sci-fi outfit. Tim Gunn tells Ra'Mon the design could either be "sublime" or a "hot green mess" - and quickly Ra'Mon figures out that it's unfortunately not going to fall on the "sublime" side. He kicks the Kermit the Frog catsuit to the floor and starts over, with only a few hours to go.

The Middle of the Pack: Logan, Carol Hannah, Shirin, Irina and Althea all manage a pass for the episode. Though frankly there were a few designs that I felt deserved a top three call out - and a few that should certainly have been in the bottom. Normally I'm a fan of Shirin, but her saloon girl dress was abysmally cliché and looked like a bad cross between a B-Western movie and a renaissance costume.

The Winners: Having lost ALL sense of taste, the judges think Nicolas' cheap white ice queen dress is all the rage. Even though they admit it looks cheap during the judging panel! Plus, the model looked like she got spooge all over her head, it was just gross.

They also like Epperson's modern Western dress, which I was also a big fan of for it's amazing details and expensive look.

Christopher also lands in the top three for his Victorian-esque vampire queen gown, which admittedly did appear extremely well constructed and quite creative. Notably, all of the top designers had obviously put a great deal of thought into their 'characters' - and it showed in the uniqueness of the designs.

In what I think is a shocking move, the judges give the win to Nicolas and his ridiculous costume, when the top spot should have absolutely gone to either Epperson or Christopher.

The Losers - Poor Gordana continues to fail to impress by creating beautiful, detailed and well-constructed outfits that are just too wearable. While on one hand her designs are nearly always gorgeous, they also totally fail to have any unique point of view. This time, her flapper dress just looks so much like a real dress from the 20's, the judges rake her over the coals for not putting enough of herself into it.

Louise's strange 20's/40's combo dress seems somewhat pretty, but I have to agree with the judges that the end result was just a mish-mash with no real personality. Louise, incidentally, was one of the designers who put the least creativity or thought into her movie 'character'.

Sadly, it is Ra'Mon, however, who totally misses the mark with his green alien dress remake. The outfit is truly ugly and looks like what it is - a last minute substandard substitution. However, I don't agree with the judges that he should have been the designer booted out. (Frankly I think Nicolas should have been on the bottom.) Ra'Mon has repeatedly shown he has some mad skills as a designer, while Louise is about as boring as dry toast. I guess this particular elimination shows the judges really mean it when they base their decision only on what happens that night, not on the designer's track record throughout the season.

After the Show: For those who don't watch the Project Runway companion show Models of the Runway, there was a bit of a shocker during last night's episode. The designers have mostly stuck with the same models through most of the season so far and have become rather loyal to them. Often when a designer goes home, so does their model, which means they no longer get to compete for their own $25,000 prize. This week, however, the models and the designers were thrown a major wrench in the works when Heidi Klum forced the designers to pick entirely new models. They were not allowed to choose the models they worked with during the last challenge, which caused quite a bit of tearful unhappiness among the designers and no end of shock and horror in the models. We'll just have to wait and see next week how the new model/designer pairings pan out.
