SheWired's Afternoon Web Crawl for Oct. 18

Here’s today’s smattering of pop culture tidbits from around the Web. Some of the ladies making headlines today: Christina Hendricks, Keira Knightley and Helen Mirren, Rooney Mara, Ke$ha, Angelina Jolie, Jordin Sparks and Megan Fox to name a few of our lesbian favorites.

Here’s today’s smattering of pop culture tidbits from around the Web…

First up, Mad Men bade farewell for another season in grand style last night, with Don making a hair-brained decision to marry his secretary, which gave Joan and Peggy a reason to laugh and toast his inability to think with his actual brain.

But this news that Jezebel picked up from the Daily Mail today is devastating – Christina Hendricks, the curvy ginge who embodies the secretary of the world Joan, has said she plans to lose weight by laying off the booze and carbs. Noooooo Christina! What would Joan think? At Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Price booze and sugar are two of the food groups, followed by bacon fat and nicotine. An ‘unnamed source’ source claims that Christina is sick of being called the “curviest” woman in Hollywood. January Jones is that you?

In a bit of what could be casting serendipity, rumor has it that Pathe, which produced The Queen has Keira Knightley in mind to play Princess Diana in a biopic about the beloved Princess of Wales’ life. The buzz is also that they are looking to cast Dame Helen Mirren as her mother. While that has the making for a great biopic, nothing has been finalized.

Meanwhile, Rooney Mara, the girl who won the equivalent of the ultimate casting lottery when she landed the role of Lisbeth Salander in the American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -- and we see why she won after her searing opening scene in The Social Network – is said to be drastically changing her appearance to play Lisbeth at director David Fincher’s behest, according to Page 6.

The rather sweet appearing Rooney has reportedly bleached her eyebrows, dyed her hair jet black and pierced her nipples for the role, which mostly sounds like teen rebellion circa 1993...

But we won’t know for sure just how far the transformation has taken Rooney since Fincher is keeping her look under wraps while on location in Sweden.

Pop sensation, who frankly looks like she could use a spa day and a bath, Ke$ha is heading into unfamiliar territory with a timely, socially-conscious song that addresses gay teens and bullying, entitled “We R Who We R.” The avowed bisexual and The Dinah alumna has a mini-album, Cannibal, set for release this November and “We R Who We R” is the first single! Enjoy!

For her directorial debut Angelina Jolie is helming a romantic comedy starring Jonah Hill and Kathryn Heigl. Hardly… Angelina has chosen to shoot a movie about war-torn Bosnia, which is totally fitting for a woman who took on the hefty roles of Marianne Pearl, the wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, in A Mighty Heart and of a mother searching for her child in The Changeling.

It looked as though Angelina’s directorial debut might be on the back burner for a while as she was banned from shooting in Bosnia. But US reported today that the ban was lifted.

Idol winner Jordin Sparks has redone the theme song from Beauty and the Beast. Now, I’m typically a fan of the original movie versions of Disney songs rather than the pop duet reduxes they tend to get for radio – see Lea Salonga singing “A Whole New World” in Aladdin, but Jordin is adorable and she sounds great. So here it is.

Megan Fox has signed on to the Jennifer Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein) penned Friends with Kids, which costars Westfeldt, Jennifer’s hunky squeeze and Mad Men star Jon Hamm, SNL’s Kristen Wiig and Adam Scott. Hamm and Wiig will play one couple while Westfeldt and Scott play the other. Megan Fox is of course the other woman who begins to date Scott’s character (it’s always the dark-haired girls).

Westfeldt is attempting a Woody Allen style triple threat with this project, writing, starring in and also directing – but she’ll have strong help from executive producers Mike Nichols (Silkwood, Closer, The Graduate), and Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill, Grand Canyon).

A third couple is yet to be cast – let’s cross our fingers that Westfeldt makes it a lesbian mom couple that actually has sex. Casting options to follow…
