Summer Nights: Tegan and Sara, Death Cab for Cutie

Usually when one plans to see Tegan and Sara in concert, it’s a common assumption that they’re usually accompanied by a sea of plaid, tattoos, and piercings singing along to every word. However last Sunday night, the iconic sounds of girl angst reverberated in the Hollywood Hills, playing for a different kind of crowd. Opening with the New Pornographers for Death Cab for Cutie at the Hollywood Bowl, the girl duo didn’t hesitate to tell the crowd that they were nervous to play at such an intimidating venue, but they held their own like a couple of pros.

Usually when one plans to see Tegan and Sara in concert, it’s a common assumption that they’re usually accompanied by a sea of plaid, tattoo and pierced women singing along to every word. However, last Sunday night the iconic sounds of girl angst reverberated in the Hollywood Hills but playing to a different kind of crowd. Opening with the New Pornographers for Death Cab for Cutie at the Hollywood Bowl, the girl duo didn’t hesitate to tell the crowd that they were nervous to play at such an intimidating venue, but they held their own like a couple of pros.

Thinking that their sibling banter only worked girl-friendly crowds, I was interested to see what their stage presence would be like, but even in a packed amphitheatre of 17,000 or so, their charm won over the audience. Sara spoke about their Mom traveling to Los Angeles for the first time and getting fresh with a Marilyn Monroe look alike while an un-amused Tegan pressed that any more small talk would force them to cut the next couple of tracks.

Their set list comprised mainly of songs off The Con, but also included classics like, “Walking with a Ghost,” “Living Room,” and “Where Does the Good Go?” Though Tegan and Sara isn’t what most of the crowd came for, many were in for a pleasant surprise with these openers.

If anyone has a chance to visit the venue, definitely give it a try. Most events sponsored by the Bowl allow for guests to bring in anything, and most opt for picnic baskets and a bottle of wine. Most concerts continue after the sun goes down, so don’t forget to bring a blanket to snuggle up to your special someone.

Being my first visit to the Hollywood Bowl, I couldn’t have asked for a better line-up than the New Pornographers, Tegan and Sara, and Death Cab for Cutie. Though Death Cab may have stolen the show as they continued the last half of their set accompanied by 50 of their closest friends, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and closed it with a breathtakingly beautiful rendition of "Transatlanticism" and a surprise display of fireworks (leftover from the night before maybe?).

The evening of romance, and amazing music was truly one I won’t soon forget, and anyone lucky enough to have visited the Bowl is sure to attest to that. If anyone is looking for beautiful evening, be sure to check out the Hollywood Bowl for a beautiful and memorable Summer night.
