'Twilight' Series Goes Down Under for Newest 'Eclipse' Cast Member

Because we’ll take any excuse we can to write about Kristen Stewart: Australian actor Xavier Samuel has been cast in Eclipse, the third movie in Stephenie Meyer’sTwilight series. The series just keeps adding to its heavyhitting cast, having tossed Dakota Fanning into the mix for New Moon.

Because we’ll take any excuse we can to write about Kristen Stewart: Australian actor Xavier Samuel has been cast in Eclipse, the third movie in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series.

Samuel, whose credits Down Under include the surfing drama Newcastle, will make his stateside screen debut as Riley, a college student and newbie vampire who joins forces with vengeful villainess Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) in her quest to avenge the death of her vampire partner James (Cam Gigandet) at the hands of Stewart’s fanged beau, Edward (Robert Pattinson), by killing Stewart’s Bella.

In the third book, Bella spends the bulk of her time pondering life’s big question: to spend eternal life with a vampire, or to play it safe with friend/werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner). If only Stewart — who previously shared the big screen with Jodie Foster in Panic Room — would just ditch Jacob and Edward and share some lip-locking moments with Victoria.

Fans of the series will be thankful when New Moon, the second film in the series, opens for the long Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 20. Keep an eye out for Dakota Fanning as Jane, a member of the mysterious Volturi, a coven of vampire royalty.

Eclipse, meanwhile, begins shooting in August in Vancouver and is slated to hit the big screen in 2010.

In the meantime, look for news out of Twilight series distributor Summit Entertainment’s Thursday panel at San Diego International Comic-Con, including a sneak preview of New Moon.
