Wonder Woman, Style Icon- A Look at Her Fashions Through the Years

The Amazing Amazon has been fighting in her star-spangled satin tights for more than 70 years and over the decades her costume has been tweaked and updated countless times.

DC Comics recently shocked many long time fans of the female superhero when they announced that she would soon sport a costume quite different from the patriotic bathing suit she’s been known for rocking so well in any era.

However, this isn’t the first time Wonder Woman traded in her classic red, white, and blue for new look.

Here’s a look at six lesser-known costumes that the icon has assumed over the years.

The “new” Wonder Woman: Dianna Prince:

Marsha P. Johnson

For a time in the late sixties, Wonder Woman was stripped of her powers and became an ordinary woman with an affinity for martial arts and modern clothes. This was the first—and arguably the most famous—of the many different outfits she wore before regaining her powers and iconic costume.

Biker Wonder Woman:

In the 1990s, Dianna lost the role of Wonder Woman to another Amazon named Artemis. During that time Dianna donned this costume that has been dubbed by fans as “biker” costume—for obvious reasons.

The Goddess of Truth:

In an attempt to shake this up, DC Comics actually killed off Dianna at one point while her mother assumed the role of Wonder Woman. During that time, Dianna joined the Gods of Olympus as the goddess of truth and wore this simple white dress with a blue cape.

Star Sapphire:

Kiyoshi Kuromiya

During the comic book event “Blackest Night” Wonder Woman became an energy-ring-wielding emissary of love as a Star Sapphire.

Today:

Just over a year ago DC made headlines when they revealed this look for Wonder Woman. Attempting to try on a new look for the first female of comics, the move created a stir of controversy, but like all other departures from her classic costume this one will soon be retired as well.

The Future:

In September, the Amazing Amazon will get yet another new costume. This time however, she’s not alone. DC has announced that their entire line of comics will be getting an “updated” look in an attempt to appeal to new readers. Time will tell if this costume will stick, but Wonder Woman has proved she can not only survive multiple interpretations, she thrives on it.
