A new statement from the Disney Channel star asks fans to "choose love."

Joshua Bassett, star of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and subject of Olivia Rodrigo's #1 hit song "driver's license," came out yesterday...as a Harry Styles stan.

The 20-year-old actor went viral in an interview with Clevver News where he harps on his love for the former One Direction singer.

"He's just cool," said Bassett. "Who doesn't think Harry Styles is cool? Also, he's hot. He's very charming too. Lots of things. I guess this is also my coming out video I guess."

While many interpreted what Bassett said as a joke, many publications ran with the idea that he actually came out of the closet, and the "news" quickly circulated around the internet.

But after a day of wild speculation by fans and media alike, Bassett released a statement earlier this afternoon on social media.

"My entire life people have told me my sexuality," he wrote. "People have shamed me for things they know nothing about. I want to say thank you to those of you who stand for love and acceptance."

He continued:

"Toxicity, hatred, and negativity say less about the subject, but say far more about those who spew it.

It's 2021. We are the generation of love & growth, it's time we start acting like it. Whethere you love me, hate me, or damn me to hell, I love you all the same.

Love who you love shamelessly. It's ok to still be figuring out who you are. Life's too shart to let ignorance and hatred win. I choose love."

Bassett ended the message with six heart emojis that formed a rainbow.

So what is the actor's sexuality? It isn't clear, and it honestly isn't our business until he is ready to share his identity with the world.
