'Moana' Directors Say a Queer Disney Princess Is Possible

With the success of Moana, Disney looks towards the future.

In an interview with the Huffington Post discussing the success of last year's animated Disney film Moana, directors Ron Clements and John Musker discussed the possibilities of a canonly queer princess hitting the big screen!

"It seems like the possibilities are pretty open at this point."

While Disney has always had some issues (and sometimes may be a bit…slow on the uptake), they also have been making solid progress forward. Since the '90s, the princess lineup has worked on adding more diversity with characters such as Jasmine, Mulan, and Tiana. While many of these characters weren’t flawless, Moana shows that there is always a movement forward, with a strong soon-to-be chieftess saving her people, no Prince Charming or ball gown in sight.

Frozen, a behemoth so big it isn’t even officially rolled into the princess line yet, deviated from the typical princess tropes by showing a story where shallow romance swings from pointless to outright harmful and the girls save themselves. The movie focuses on the strong bond between the two sisters, and it didn’t go unnoticed that Elsa’s journey strongly resembles that of a coming out story. This, along with the want for a LGBT Disney princess, lead to the Twitter movement #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.

It wouldn’t be the first time Disney has pushed the envelope in queer kids content. Several of the shows from Disney Channel have LGBT representation, including Andi Mack and Star vs. The Forces of Evil.

So how do we get a gay princess?

"It would be driven by a director or a directorial team that really wanted to push that and if John Lasseter liked the idea, but I would say we haven’t ever really had restrictions placed on what we’ve done," Musker said of the process of pushing boundaries. With both Moana and The Princess and the Frog under their belt, they should know.

So we just need a director to pursue it. Who would you like to see direct Disney’s first LGBT princess flick?
