With Dan Levy’s new comedy series Big Mistakes finally hitting Netflix, you can’t help but be enraptured by star Taylor Ortega.
The Out cover star is rising to fame in Hollywood after more than a decade of working in the industry. It’s finally her time to shine, and she’s making the most of it.
Big Mistakes isn’t the first time the queer actor has put her comedic chops to the test; she has been making fans laugh for years in shows like Welcome to Flatch, Ghosts, and even an episode of What We Do in the Shadows.
So who is this funny lady who is capturing the attention of fans who are just now discovering her, thanks to her starring role in Big Mistakes?
The 36-year-old star grew up in New Jersey in a family full of big personalities. Her parents were strict, but her father is partially responsible for her love of movies, introducing her to some less-than-age-appropriate fare at a young age, like Reservoir Dogs and Saturday Night Live.
After attending Columbia University, she started her career in entertainment by making people laugh in New York’s improv scene. She ended up putting those improv skills to work with her first big break in Paul Feig’s mockumentary sitcom Welcome to Flatch before she started getting offered bigger and bigger roles that would eventually lead her to starring alongside Levy.
Ortega, who is queer, spent much of her early twenties dating men who weren’t right for her before she got honest with herself about her sexuality. The actress admitted to Out that in this way she related to her Big Mistakes character who wants to break up with her boyfriend.
"A really common form of queer thought that a lot of people develop really young is having to double-think constantly. You’re accepting a truth of like, ‘And then eventually, I’ll live the same normal way everyone else is living, where I’m not double-thinking and I’m not doing these laps,'" she says.
Ortega started getting acting roles in 2014, but it would be a few years before she started booking regular jobs. She scored a one-episode role in Succession in 2018 before landing the Kim Possible television movie, an episode of Party Down, and eventually a starring role in Welcome to Flatch.
Since then, she’s been in Jackpot! alongside John Cena and Awkwafina, and the sequel film Another Simple Favor with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick before landing her biggest role yet in Big Mistakes.
Who does Taylor Ortega play in 'Big Mistakes'?
The new Netflix comedy series, created by Levy and Rachel Sennott, follows a pair of siblings who become unwittingly entangled with a criminal organization after a misguided necklace theft.
In Big Mistakes, Ortega plays Morgan, Levy’s sister, who is a New York City public school teacher living back in her hometown with the boyfriend she’s outgrown. When Morgan steals a necklace while shopping with her gay pastor brother (Levy), they end up indebted to the wrong people. It’s this crime-heavy plot line that propels the plot forward, along with the loving, if acerbic, relationship with her brother.
Morgan is faced with a proposal from the boyfriend she has clearly outgrown, several times over the course of the show, something that Ortega says a lot of straight women recognize as feeling authentic because their partnerships are often "not really what they would choose for themselves."
Ortega continues, "She sees the ring, and it’s sort of like…this is a really nice version of [that] life. Am I crazy for not wanting this? Am I just the most difficult person alive? I think that that’s a really common feeling too. I felt that 100 million times."
The new season will jump forward in time by five years and plenty has gone down during that period. Rue (Zendaya) is running from drug traffickers in Mexico, Jules (Hunter Schafer) is working as a high-end sugar baby to pay for art school, and Nate (Jacob Elordi) is married to Cassie (Sydney Sweeeney), who is creating adult content on a fan site similar to OnlyFans.
Fans are dying to know what turmoil, chaos, and heartbreak are in store for season three, as the first two seasons had no shortage of wild moments.
Although the show might not be as queer as Heated Rivalry, The L Word, or Fellow Travelers, Euphoria is full of Gen Z’s delightful brand of sexual and gender fluidity, which means that throughout its first two seasons, there were plenty of dramatic moments to keep LGBTQ+ fans happy.

Trans character Jules has a penchant for sleeping with older men in an attempt to make herself feel more feminine, which leads to her having sex with the mysterious “DominantDaddy" in season one, who turns out to be Nate's father Cal, played by the late Eric Dane.
Nate discovers the truth when he watches his dad’s sex tape and ends up catfishing Jules in a misguided and disturbing attempt to protect his family.
6. Jules cheats on Rue with Elliot
Rue befriends Elliot in season two, but while he has feelings for her, she doesn’t return them, and Jules ends up cheating on Rue by hooking up with Elliot and keeping it a secret from her.
The whole thing is a mess, and their fractured relationship closes out the second season, leaving fans reeling and waiting years for season three to get some kind of resolution.

The talented multi-hyphenate has showcased all of her incredible skills throughout her impressive career as a member of Fifth Harmony and in her solo endeavors.
Besides her hit songs like "Love Lies," "Motivation," and "Dancing With a Stranger," Normani has also been a finalist on two hit reality competition shows: Dancing With the Stars and The Masked Singer.
Although her career has certainly had plenty of ups and downs, the singer is beyond grateful that her passionate LGBTQ+ fans have supported her as she navigates all of the complexities in the entertainment industry.
"It was really a whirlwind of an experience in the best way possible. I am in the position that I'm in because of my fans and because of my supporters. I know that it hasn't always been an easy journey in terms of my career, but also personally. That support is priceless. When my crown is crooked, you help me put it back on straight," Normani tells Out.
With next year serving as the 15 year anniversary of Fifth Harmony's formation on The X Factor, fans are manifesting a reunion in the near future.
The girl group briefly came back together during a surprise performance during the Jonas Brothers tour last year, so it's safe to say a reconciliation isn't out of the question.
"There is nothing that I can tell you, but you will just have to sit back and watch and be patient. It was really special last year being able to share the stage with the Jonas Brothers. I'm so proud of us and what we've been able to achieve. I think we did a pretty great job."
Dubbed the biggest girl group of the 2010s by Billboard, Fifth Harmony has an impressive catalog of hits throughout the years. However, one particular music video stands out as Normani's personal favorite.
"I'm going to say 'Miss Movin' On,' how about that? I'm not going to go with the obvious, which is obviously 'Work from Home,' but that was our first video that we ever shot. We shot two music videos in one day! I'm sure that wasn't allowed. Coming right off the show, our parents didn't know any better."
