The Pentagon outlined its plans Friday to make sure that gay men and women can serve in the military without hiding their sexual orientation by this summer.
Over the next three months, administrators, commanders, and rank-and-file military personnel will be trained on new policies and protocol now that the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly is being repealed.
Also being addressed are changes to recruiting, training, housing, and discharging troops in a military without "don't ask, don't tell" as well as the possibility of providing certain benefits for same-sex partners that married heterosexual personnel can access.
President Barack Obama, Defense secretary Robert Gates, and Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Adm. Michael Mullen must all certify that the military has been properly prepared before the repeal becomes official.
