While I can get on board with a Party of Five / I Know What You Did Last Summer retrospective coupled with a rare screening of Heartbreakers I’m filing the idea of Jennifer Love Hewitt replacing Mariska Hargitay as the new female detective on Law & Order: SVU under “Fuck NO!”

For 12 seasons Mariska’s Olivia Benson, alongside Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler, has faced off with the scum of New York to make for compelling television and now Deadline is reporting that while Mariska scales back her hours to – I don’t know – raise her family or something, Jennifer Love may step in as the new lead detective.

Deadline reports that 13 episodes into the new season Benson will take a supervisory position, thereby making room for a new tight-turtleneck, leather jacket sporting female detective to fill her sensible but stylish shoes. Word on the street is that Jennifer Love is the actress producers have in mind following her Emmy worthy guest spot as a rape victim this past season.

Although my first instinct is to scream, “NOOOOOOO!” at this tidbit of casting news., everyone deserves a shot, so I’ll keep my gob shut until the first time Jennifer Love manhandles and interrogates a suspect in the precinct. But with Mariska’s semi-departure Jennifer’s got a pretty big holster to strap on.
