The Moscow authorities have turned down an application for a gay pride parade that would have had an estimated 5,000 members of the LGBT community marching through the streets of the country's capital and most populous city, Interfax is reporting.

Moscow's pride organizer Nikolay Alexeyev told Interfax, "I have just received a phone call from the mayor's office. They said our application was turned down."  The mayor's office offered no explanation as to why the application was denied, and Alexeyev has not received a written declaration from the government.

Alexeyev confirmed that there was no contingency plan at this time but he was hopeful that the group would plan something else in the future.  "There will be some form of action, just the same," he said.

The mayor and other city administrators have declined comment.
