One Step in the Right Direction for America's Gay Workers

The Labor Department will announce on Wednesday that gay and lesbian employees will be entitled to unpaid time off to care for their partners' newborns or loved ones. This move would give gay members in the American work force equal opportunity to access the Family and Medical Leave Act.

The Labor Department will announce on Wednesday that gay and lesbian employees will be entitled to unpaid time off to care for their partners' newborns or loved ones, the Associated Press is reporting.

This move would give gay members in the American work force equal opportunity to access the Family and Medical Leave Act.

The Act allows workers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave each year to take care of loved ones or themselves.  It also allows employees to take time for adoption.  The law previously only applied that to heterosexual couples.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is expected to make the announcement on Wednesday.
