The Feel Good star has been open about getting top surgery in late 2021, and subsequently going on testosterone, which they’ve credited with improving their life.

“And it’s been the best year of life, genuinely,” they told audiences as part of their Netflix special,Sap. “It’s not like I’m that happy, I’m not like, skipping around. It’s truly just like, the absence of agony, that’s all it is. And that’s a low bar, and who are we to deny anybody that?”

Martin has previously acknowledged that “the way they feel about [their] gender identity is ongoing and evolving,” a subject that was introduced in the second season of Feel Good—which the comedian co-wrote and starred in—as well. Those episodes premiered not long after Martin came out as nonbinary on Instagram in April 2021.

“I experience gender dysphoria sometimes,” they admitted at the time, noting that photo shoots sometimes triggered it. “When that dysphoria hits it sucks, and I find wearing a binder…can sometimes help me feel more confident.”

Watching Martin go from pushing through their discomfort with photo shoots that year to posting a topless selfie with no hint of self-consciousness about it really drives home the “trans joy” part of their Instagram post, and you love to see it.
